There were few who, just over the announcement of Galaxy S II at Mobile World Congress 2011, and began to wonder about how the newcomer Samsung exceed one year later and began to elucubrar all kinds of theories about what it would be future for a South Korean began to shine enough in the mobile industry.

What would be next? How do you intend to evolve this team? Questions remained for nearly a year, during which the S II broke all sales records for Samsung and became one of the most successful devices in 2011, getting all kinds of awards from industry and – perhaps most important yet – the users themselves, who recognized in this product a worthy competitor to the iPhone 4, then the 4S.

That’s why, when the first leaks surrounding this team began to create a whole hype machine it enlarged each of the things that was said in the previous release, including the leaking of this horrible model approval Brazil.

When we saw – we were at the launch in London – we were struck by the simplicity of its design and features announced, and many of those who were talking about it and creating expectations about the room looking out the faces, perhaps a little disappointed not see a supermachine on stage.

The truth is that the new Galaxy S III has a lot of design-level detail, and inside that are the promise of making a difference in terms of user experience, which – perhaps – does not look much like a series of great specifications, but which at first struck us positively.

Not that we are dealing with a phone that does not look in technical features: Quad-Core processor, 4.8-inch screen, eye recognition, 8 MP camera and many other things that we will see, but we can also understand those who expected something more … It’s hard to make everyone happy.

I could write about it, but I prefer the phone to speak for itself with test results to which we submitted.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Galaxy S III.

The Galaxy S III is a way that – according to the manufacturer – has a direct inspiration from natural forms and materials, so that the rounded, organic colors and sounds that evoke the elements are part of this new design line.

Although it is shiny and smooth, the device offers a very good grip in hand, even in moments of sweaty palms. I have my doubts about the strength of the ceramic coated finish, but only a more intensive use will give us the answer on this particular issue.

Its size did not grow too much, which speaks highly of the capabilities of the design team of South Korea. These are comparisons of side, front and wide that will show more clearly than I speak.

Its edges are rounded and smoothed, delivering smooth lines and manicured. This is helped by its glossy finish and the absence of roughness in his body, making this powerful team something subtle and delicate to the eye.

Our unit is colored Blue Pebble, with a glossy finish and metallic grain, but with a look reminiscent of river rocks. A nice touch is striking at first sight.

Personally I think it is this version is the one that looks most interesting to the eye. The white version is also very nice, but looks less premium than the unit we are reviewing right now. Matter of taste.

Following in the back are protruding in the upper 8 MP camera, a party that was subtly enhanced if we think only in the specifications, but which delivers optimized performance in both video recording and in photographs. Later we express ourselves about it.

To the left of the lens of the camera LED flash accompanying him, while the left is the speaker unit. This position is ideal compared to the previous model as the height that has the lens can never be covered to be supported on flat surfaces.

Termination of your grille is chrome, highlighting such other details on the computer that are in that color.

Below this we find the Samsung logo made of metal and slightly raised positions. A purely aesthetic detail.

In its upper edge we find a noise cancellation microphone which also acts to improve the audio located to generate a better stereo effect. You will also see a 3.5mm headphone jack and space necessary to enter the nail and you can uncover the phone.

On the left side have only the button that raises and lowers the volume.

To the right you will see the on / off.

At the bottom you will have access to the other microphone and microUSB connector for charging and data synchronization, which also allows connection via TV Out MHL.

In Galaxy S II – and the first as well – the screen was topped by a chrome which was responsible for the team crown. For the newcomer, this edge has been removed to make way for the rounded glass screen made of Gorilla Glass II.

In fact, in the front panel glass we see that this takes full ownership, leaving aside their straight lines to make way for a curvature somewhat reminiscent of the Galaxy Nexus, but executed in a much more elegant and better materials.

At the top of the screen is the proximity sensors, ambient light, the front camera of 1.9 MP and – to the delight of many who called for – a multi-color LED notifications will tell at a glance if you have any interaction that have seen.

The lower the front of the Galaxy S III is a solitary physical button that takes you to the Home screen, haptic and two buttons: Context Menu and Back.

A small detail that we liked was the maintenance of the finish of the back of the phone in the area around the screen, providing uniformity in the color of the team and keeping the predominant pattern of veins in it.

The side of the Galaxy S III has the same ends of the phone, though less bright and in a contrasting hue as the color of the phone: If it is white, the edge will be silver, if the computer is blue, it will top a metallic blue.

The camera takes the Galaxy SIII is very similar – on paper – which incorporates its predecessor. Its sensor is 8 megapixels, and is capable of 1080p Full HD video at 30 frames per second and integrating different options to further improve the quality of images and videos of very good quality. Is accompanied by a good power white LED.

Our protagonist capture photos with a maximum resolution of 3264 — 2448, while incorporating features such as HDR effect that improves the outcome of photography, autofocus or manual, special effects, etc.. It also adds an LED flash to help you in those moments where there is low light.

Available resolutions of the camera are as follows:

  • 8 M 3264 — 2448 (4:3)
  • 6 M 3264 — 1836 (16:9)
  • 3.2 M 2048 — 1536 (4:3)
  • 2.4 M 2048 — 1152 (16:9)
  • 0.9 M 1280 — 720 (16:9)
  • M 0.3 640 — 480 (4:3)

The settings you have available picture mode are quite complete, although they seem a little to those who already brings his predecessor. Here we will detail a few:

  • Capture Mode> Unique – Continuous Shot – HDR – Smile Detection – Beauty – Overview – Entertainment – Photo Sharing – Share picture friend.
  • Focus Mode> Auto Focus – Macro – Face Detection
  • Scene Mode> None – Portrait – Panorama – Night – Sports – Party / Indoor – Beach / Snow – Evening – Fall Color – Fireworks – Text – Candlelight – Backlight
  • Effects> None – Negative – black and white – Sepia
  • White balance> Auto – Daylight – Light – Incandescent – Fluorescent
  • ISO> Auto – 100 – 200 – 400 to 800
  • Measurement> Central heavy – Focus – Matrix

Among other options, you can adjust the exposure value, activate a timer, set the measurement, turn the system motion stabilizer, activate the Auto Contrast, adjust image quality, turn on GPS tag, and more.

With the Galaxy SIII you can make videos with a maximum resolution of 1920 — 1080 Full HD at a rate of 30 frames per second as the highest quality. The video is made in MP4 format with AVC codec to 17.0 Mbps and AAC audio codec at 128Kbps, 48.0 KHz, Stereo.

The recording profiles incorporating video mode are:

  • Full HD 1920 x 1080 – 16:9 – 30 fps – Audio AAC Stereo
  • HD 1280 — 720 – 16:9 – 30 fps – Audio AAC Stereo
  • SD 720 x 480 – 4:3 – 30 fps – Audio AAC Stereo
  • VGA 640 x 480 – 4:3 – 30 fps – Audio AAC Stereo
  • QVGA 320 — 240 4:3 – 30 fps – Audio AAC Stereo

As in photo mode, here you can customize some settings to get a better result when making videos. I will detail some below:

  • Effects> None – Negative – black and white – Sepia
  • White balance> Auto – Daylight – Light – Incandescent – Fluorescent

You can also activate the LED flash to be used as additional light on the video recordings, you can also adjust the exposure value, activate a timer, turn on visibility outside, turn on Anti Shake on and more.

Then we leave you with a video recorded with the Galaxy SIII with the highest quality and a comparison with the Galaxy S II.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII is a team that certainly is 100% optimized for the multimedia world. It has a powerful quad-core processor and a display of excellent quality, ideal for movies to play up with the best quality possible. Also included is a new music player, supported by sound effects SoundAlive, being able to emulate 7.1 channel audio.

Music Player

The Samsung Galaxy SIII has a new music player which integrates new features for even better sound quality.

You can play music files in MP3, WAV, AAC, AAC + Plus, AC3 and FLAC, as well as to view the cover of the album of the artist you’re listening to the lyrics of the song. Also you have the typical options for shuffle and repeat that most media players have.

But now comes what stands out the player, which is the equalizer and sound effects. The equalizer is composed of 7 bands reaching a maximum of 10db, you can also set the following effects:

  • 3D
  • Bass
  • Reverb level
  • Room size
  • Clarity

And last but not least, you have up to 14 profiles pre-defined equalizer. These are:

  • Car
  • Normal
  • Pop
  • Rock
  • Dance
  • Jazz
  • Classic
  • Vocal
  • Increases in serious
  • Sharp increases
  • Virtual 7.1 CH
  • Outsourcing
  • Coffee
  • Musical

All these sound effects are powered by SoundAlive.

And finally we see other news of bringing this new version, because now you can play songs directly into folders, which undoubtedly will accommodate many in his music playback.

FM Radio

Our new Galaxy family member has a comprehensive built-in FM Radio. It is very similar to the interface that has the radius of the Galaxy Note.

You can record audio directly from the FM radio and view station information through the RDS technology that lets you know what song is currently broadcasting or other important information from the station or local info.

The recepcionada signal quality is very good, as is the sound quality was good bass and treble and good audio power, which must be emphasized because in other audio equipment power is very low in FM Radio.

Video Playback

With the Galaxy SIII can play videos in AVI, DivX, XviD, MP4 and 3GP with a maximum resolution of 1920 — 1080 at a rate of 30 frames per second and up to 60 pictures at a resolution of 1280 — 720.

The player lets you choose repeat options, besides being able to control the brightness of the screen and allow you to order a video by chapter and also allow you to edit them.

Since we have the opportunity to try a smartphone with a big screen, well this is an appropriate resolution for these times, we saw how important it is to set the font size from the operating system, because if you get to navigate and you want to maximize the phone you can do properly, seeing as much information than you could do with other teams.

Browser performance is slightly better than in other terminals and is probably due to the hardware that comes with this phone, because pages with lots of information take less time to be deployed, of course, leaving aside the aspects of speed data transfer (wireless or data plan). Moreover, this browser allows us to have a lot of windows open without the smartphone even to acknowledge, that is, is quite fluid.

The GPS features our protagonist works great, does not take almost anything connected with the satellites. This team also supports GLONASS, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) developed by the Soviet Union is today administered by the Russian Federation, which represents the counterpart to the American GPS we all know. GLONASS is a constellation of 24 satellites (21 active and 3 spare satellites) located in three orbital planes with 8 satellites each, following an orbit inclined 64.8 ° with a radius of 25,510 kilometers.

The GLONASS constellation orbits the earth at an altitude of 19 100 km (slightly lower than traditional GPS) and takes approximately 11 hours and 15 minutes to complete an orbit. In this way, it takes much less to connect and provides better accuracy.

Because of this, it works just as well as the GPS that incorporates Nokia are the best, I must say. Delay only 3 seconds to connect to the satellites, but obviously depending on location, although our test conducted outdoors.

Like all Android incorporates Google Maps and Google Navigator to use the GPS, applications that work very well without any problem. From Play Store you can download Google Earth and other apps like Waze to make use of GPS equipment.

The screen incorporates the Galaxy S III is Super AMOLED HD, with a size of 4.8 inches and 1280 — 720 pixels, allowing us to watch HD content at full size. The 16 million color AMOLED screen is noticeable, as it achieves vivid colors and real black, giving a correct contrast and brightness to the images or videos that look at the new flagship of South Korea.

We must also highlight the glass Gorilla Glass II that protects the screen , which is thinner than the Gorilla Glass equipping the predecessor of S III. The sensitivity of the multi touch screen is very good and feels faster response to an action, although we can not ensure whether the processor is more powerful or capacitive element of the screen has also improved its sensitivity by increasing the pressure points that can be recognized to be more precise movements. Now, the reality is that the improved feeling of use in this regard.

In full sunlight, the Super AMOLED screen HD behaves very well, although it is necessary to set the brightness to maximum. To top it off, many thought that the S III does not have a screen format PenTile subpixel type or have a new one, but to our surprise the screen is extremely similar to the Galaxy Note.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII has two audio sources: The headset and speaker.

The sound quality that you deliver the phone when making calls is very good. It gives you clear sound, loud and clear, which is not saturated by having the volume too high.

The speaker did not like at all because I found something that delivers sound “loud” does not deliver the sound we found in the Galaxy SII and the Note. Just have an acceptable sound and it sounds tight, but not what I expected personally. Now, the good thing is that is located next to the camera and it is overhung the housing, allowing the sound comes out normally when the computer is on a flat surface.

Operating System

The Samsung Galaxy SIII comes standard with the Android OS 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, customized by the new Samsung TouchWiz interface 4.0. Thanks to powerful processor Quad-core, Android flies on this phone like never before, really impressed with the speed gained.

Home Screen

The new home screen that shows our hero is completely different – graphically speaking – which already include the ancestors of the Galaxy family, incorporating new transition effects and animations, adding also some sounds that complement the visuals.

Is composed of 7 desks, which can remove or add more desktops. In them you can add widgets, create folders and shortcuts.

We also have 5 wallpapers animated backgrounds and 8 fixed to completely customize your desktop.

The Contacts menu interface is very similar to what we see in the Galaxy Ice Cream Sandwich IBS, ie, the same as found in most of the Galaxy family computers of last generation. You add all that contact information such as name, phone, assign to a group, email, chat name, address, notes, pen name, website and the number of Internet call, adding also the contact picture.

Multimedia Gallery is almost equal to that which brings Ice Cream Sandwich originally only change some colors and icons.

And other applications menu

Over here we can see the main menu of the Samsung Galaxy SIII, which maintains the original interface Ice Cream Sandwich HOLO, collecting applications and widgets, but with a touch of TouchWiz.

For here we see the setup menu:

For here we see how the keypad:

We also have some unique features and applications that Samsung has implemented in the Galaxy SIII. Some of them will the detail below:

Voice S

This is one of the most interesting features of the phone. As a very capable response to Apple’s personal assistant Siri, S Voice receives user requests, processes them, understand them and provides relevant information based on the request. The system works quite well in English, recognizing simple commands to call, send messages and email inquiries about the weather in your area, search on the internet, play media and other things.

This service – contrary to its competition – is available in Spanish, with locations in Spain and Latin America. In tests with the latter option the results were more than satisfactory, although not yet fully understood us when we ask you to find some things in English that have a similar pronunciation in our language. Anyway, is very well made interaction, getting conversations with this wizard are natural and fluid.

S Beam

This service is the version of Samsung Beam, implemented earlier in the Galaxy Nexus, uses Wi-Fi Direct and NFC to generate a rapid interaction and thus provide an interface to transfer information quickly and stable. Its promised speed of 300 MBps is very close to reality in use, and the experience is more pleasant to transfer files of considerable size.

Undoubtedly, a good use for the NFC, who daily farther from being just a desired standard means of payment, and that begins to be used in the real world as a means of communication between computers, other equipment and accessories.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII account is fairly complete in terms of connectivity. It includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n /, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G/HSDPA/HSPA +, Wi-Fi Hotspot, DLNA, NFC, Android Beam and S Beam.

Our protagonist is able to operate in the majority of operators in the world, since it operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 GPRS EDGE UMTS HSDPA and HSPA + 850/900/1900/2100. It is also compatible with 4G LTE networks in some countries.

We tested the Wi-Fi and works quite well, similar to how it works in the Galaxy Note. It has a very good transfer speed and a very good reception.

Like the Wi-Fi Hotspot, being able to have up to 8 devices connected to the Wi-Fi Galaxy created by SIII.

We tested the Samsung Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth SIII Galaxy Galaxy 3.0 SII transferring a file that weighs no more than 5 MB, transferred in just 32 seconds, while Wi-Fi Direct, the transfer was made in 7 seconds.

The DLNA also worked correctly and that at no time had a break in the HD video playback or when playing music.

The Galaxy SIII battery is Li-Ion 2100 mAh, EB-L1G6LLU and operates at 3.8 volts.

Personally I must say the battery life surprised me. I start using the system fully charged from 06:30 am and from there I am all day using the computer, either to chat WhatsApp, reply and compose email, check Twitter and listening to music via Bluetooth, while mention the phone calls.

If I do this in other equipment, the battery reaches me hopefully last until 19:00 or 20:00 hrs. approx. With the Galaxy SIII battery until I left the next day, offering a range in actual use of a little over 24 hours, something that is considerably and is much appreciated, so you do not have to go with the charger everywhere.

Benchmark AnTuTu

The Galaxy S III is a bullet. A bullet ceramics, elegant design and very well maintained. Technical specifications shout innovation everywhere, and each of the implemented improvements have been developed with the end consumer in mind, which is sure to be a pleasure for those who experience the new features this device brings.

We call attention to the battery consumption, a perennial problem in this segment, but well resolved by the Koreans to provide a consumption rather than according to what someone would look, which eventually exceed our exacting standards.

The camera also has seen a number of changes that favor significantly the image quality, resource use and integration with social networks, allowing more experience in this area substantially compared to its predecessor.

It is no exaggeration to say that talking about comparisons in actual use of computer and operating system, the Galaxy S III is a step above many of its contemporary competitors, and several other top of the S II, an icon of the industry in 2011. The jump in performance is really noticeable when we talk about the integration of all hardware + software, but – again – more by experience than by other more subjective things like the speed of reaction … Yes, this also improved, but perhaps not everyone can actually notice in day to day.

However, by the standards of today, this is a giant of underutilized properties. Android operating system is optimized to run more than correct on this computer, but 95% of Google applications in real-Play does not take advantage of the capabilities of the processor. Why use 4 cores if the majority of computers on the market yet uses only one?

As happened with the advent of dual core processors, playing wait a while to see how they do the developers to get real benefit to a device that – undoubtedly – has become one of the most important of the first half of 2012, leaving the bar high for competitors who arrive after their products.

And what is left for the South Korean company itself? Well, since we can anticipate a good sale of its high, considering the great expectations generated in the previous one, and make great advertising campaign to push its launch.

Definitely a great phone … From the best that has passed through our hands. In fact, we struggled to find a problem or something to stand out from a negative standpoint. Perhaps we are left with the temperature being generated in the hand and the lack of some features that we would have liked to see … Because that is what this device, marking a present rather than auspicious for a company and consolidated their position in the first line global mobile industry.

It is also a statement of principles for the future: The way forward, the introduction of new materials and a design change that is consistent with changes in experience, and promises to be further optimized in the latter area than in more and more power .

The ill-fated career of the nuclei and gigahertz – the same one we saw in computers – is not consistent with the things a person looks on your Smartphone. Yes, power is desirable, but if the battery will last for two hours does not help … At Samsung I finally began to understand.

However, the most important thing we can highlight this team is what is not obvious, and we return to that discussion in late February 2011, we all think about what lay ahead.

How will you overcome this in Samsung? Insurance and are working on that long ago, and expectations are higher than ever. Can they compete with the shadow of their own products?

We hope so …

The Unmissable

  • Display excellent definition and good color.
  • Battery gives great autonomy.
  • Services and accessories to Android very well executed.
  • Multicolor LED for notifications.

The unpresentable

  • The camera could have been better.
  • Home button is uncomfortable if you have fat fingers.
  • High-pitched sound from the speaker. Sound may disturb high volume.
